Knight's Tour User's Manual

Introduction

Knight's tour is a very old chess puzzle. The object of the game is to move the knight, using only legal knight moves, in such a way that he visits each square on the chessboard exactly one time. This can be done in 63 moves (this version of the game does not include the start position as a move).

Basic Play

Tap the square where you would like the knight to move. If this is a legal knight move the knight will move to this position. For those unfirmiliar with how a knight moves, its basically in an L shape. The picture below shows all possible legal moves (the squares marked in green) from the given square.

Advanced Play

Setting the start position of the knight

The start position of the knight can be set by tapping the options button and setting the knight start row and cloumn. Note that the row and column must be anywhere from 1 to 8 (you can't start off the board). The picture below shows the options dialog with the default settings.

Playing a closed loop game

By default a win is when you have visited each position on the chessboard. If you would like to make the game a bit more challenging you can select to play a "closed loop game". This means that after you have visited all the positions on the board, in order for you to win, the next legal move must take you back to your start position. This is much more challenging than an open loop game in which just visiting each square is sufficent. In order to play a closed loop game check the box next to "Close loop to win" on the options screen.

Advanced Features

Saving and loading games

You can save a game any time after you make your first move. Saving the game allows you to get back to that game later, or ask a friend for advice on a game, or just for bragging rights. In order to save the game, tap the button labeled Save.

If you have one or more saved games, you can reload them by tapping the Load button. This will bring up the screen pictured below.

To load a game, select the game you wish to load in the list and tap the load button. Note that this will reset the game that you are currently playing. You can also delete saved games by selecting them and tapping the delete button.

Replaying a game

If you want to replay a game, either to show someone or to see how you got somewhere you can click the play button on the main screen. This will replay the game from the beginning. If you want to stop the playback, tap anywhere on the screen. The play button is circled in green in the picture below
